Painting by Italian artist Giovanni Boldini of Marthe de Florian, the French actress and his formal muse has been discovered.  The flat is owned by de Florian’s granddaughter in 9th arrondissement, Paris.

Along with love letters tied
with ribbon from Boldini to Marthe de Florian .

The Paris flat has been untouched for 70 years.  Marthe de Florian’s granddaughter went to live in south of France before World War II and never returned. The flat was discovered after the granddaughter died at the age of 91.  She paid rent in full for the last 70 years.

A love-note and a biographical reference to the work painted in 1898, when the actress was 24, cemented its authenticity. At auction the painting sold for €2.1 million, a record for the artist.

The painting is beautiful.  But, I’m wondering who is going to live in that incredible flat?  I’ll take the flat any day.  Such an amazing story.
