There is so much pain and tragedy in our world lately. I have been feeling sad and hopeless on my beloved Thailand and unfortunate events in some of my dearest friends’ life. How does one deal with tragedy and suffering? I have been thinking of how to cultivate hope in darkest hours. My mother and I were lucky enough to hear his holiness, Dalai Lama spoke several times. He often said that “When we meet real tragedy in life, we can react in two ways–either by losing hope and falling into self-destructive habits, or by using the challenge to find our inner strength.” We are also fortunate to be able to cultivate our sense of self though meditation and yoga. It is such a privilege to have these tools to find some silence, stillness and to look at our challenges in a different manner. I think we always have choices of how we choose to view our own pain and tragedy.
